Early History
Aberporth FC was originally formed as RAE in 1949 as part of the MOD base in Aberporth, which was established after WWII.
Playing in Ceredigion’s Division 1, we achieved our highest ever league position during the 1960/61 season where we finished runners up in Division 1 to champions St Dogmaels. This success however was short lived as we finished bottom of the league the following season, which unfortunately saw the club disband for the majority of the 1960s and 1970s.
The club reformed briefly in the newly formed Ceredigion League Division 2 during the 1979/80 season, and it was during this season the club one its first ever piece of silverware, beating Bargod in the final of the Ceredigion Cup. Once again, this success was short lived with the club again folding after just one season.
Junior Teams
Although the 1980s saw no senior team play in the village, it was during this time that the clubs junor teams began to flourish, thanks to amongst others, Maelor Williams who chaired our Mini Minors Committee and coached several teams throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Running teams across all ages, including a Girls Team, our junior teams have enjoyed enormous success over the years – even having tours to places such as Kilkenny, Ireland.
Recent History
After a period of 10 years, mainly thanks to success of the junior teams providing more players, the Senior Team reformed in 1990/91 as RAE Aberporth. Led by Manager Rhys “Boss Man” Evans, his hard work and dedication over the years right through to today has ensured that the club has continued.
During the season of 1995/96 the club re-named as Aberporth FC, which has been our official club name ever since. It was during this time, that the club adopted its nickname – ‘The Airmen’ due to its links with the MOD site and the Airfield which later developed into the West Wales Airport.
During the 1990s, the club steadily built itself into a competitive team within Division 2, having some successful cup runs along the way. In 2001/02, we achieved promotion to Division 1, which was the first time in our history we played in the top tier where the league had more than one tier.
Over the last 20 years, the club has been up and down between Division 1 and 2, with some memorable seasons along the way including another Ceredigon Cup win in 2005/06.
The team, who have been led by Manager Ivan Wilson with support by Rhys Evans for a number of seasons currently enjoy playing in Division 2 of the Costcutter Ceredigion League, where we can be competitive every week (nearly) and hope to return to Division 1 in the near future.
